Soaring Above and Beyond: LIPAD 2020 (UP MSS Anniversary Month)

Every year in the month of February, the University of the Philippines Materials Science Society celebrates the founding of the organization; this year is no different. Applicants, members, and alumni alike came together to celebrate UP MSS’ 21st anniversary with the theme, “Lipad: Soaring higher through the years”. The month-long event was celebrated through a series of events, starting with Palag, followed by Mulat, then Handog, and culminating with Tindig.

Palag

To kickstart the event, a fun competition was held amongst the applicants and members held from February 10-14. Each day was filled with challenges that were based on the four core values of the organization: integrity, excellence, professionalism, and camaraderie.

Mulat

The first event in the line up is Mulat, an interactive exhibit truly showed us how UP MSS has risen through the years. Featuring the organization’s history, vision and mission, flagship events, and more, this exhibit was launched inside Palma Hall on February 18 and was held up until February 20.

Handog

On the day of the anniversary, UP MSS celebrated by arranging a grand pakain, which was free hotdogs, for not only those affiliated to the organization but also the people of the department, such as other faculty, staff, and students. This was the organization’s way of giving back to the Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering (DMMME) for helping the organization grow these past 21 years.

Tindig

To top it all off, the members hosted an anniversary night, which essentially was the culminating event of the anniversary month. Applicants, members, and alumni came together in a night of fun and games for the celebration of the organization as a whole, one that will surely be remembered for the years to come.

Everlasting love bloomed at EVERGREEN: Flower Sale 2020

UP MSS celebrates a love that lasts forever.

Last February 14, 2020, the University of the Philippines Materials Science Society celebrated Valentine’s Day and held its annual Flower Sale with the theme EVERGREEN: For a Love That Lasts Forever. The booth was located at the AS-PHAN walkway, between Palma Hall and Lagmay Hall, and operated from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. This event was led by Patricia Manarang, with Andie Fernandez and Cedrick Napa acting as the Logistics heads, Claire Natividad and Wynona Magnaye as the heads of Public Relations, and Kristine Rubio as the head of Creatives.

Numerous members of the organization also lent a helping hand by volunteering to prepare and handle bouquets, deliver orders, document the event, and manage the booth. Applicants from batch 19B were also encouraged to volunteer as part of their buddy tasks. All in all, more than 30 people signed up as staff for the day. Flower Sale 2020 generated a total profit of P18,741 and around 80 customers were served from different locations within the UP campus and the surrounding areas.

Vantage Point: The UP MSS 19B Applicants’ Orientation

The UP Materials Science Society welcomed its newest batch of potential applicants in the semester’s Applicants’ Orientation, themed Vantage Point, last January 29, 2020.

The program, hosted by Ric Alano was kicked off by a video greeting from our special alumni guest, Ms. Diane Corsino. She reminisced about her experience with UP MSS and how the organization became a huge part in her college experience. She also gave tips to the aspiring members when it comes to dealing with college life, on both academics and affiliations. She’s currently pursuing her post-grad studies at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan.

The spotlight was turned over to the organization’s major projects and events, starting with the annual Materials Challenge presented by MatCh 2020 head Mike Ramos. MSS Anniversary Month 2020 co-heads Mariz Domingo and Janella Sales proceeded to showcase this year’s event line-up and activities in store for the organization’s 21st birthday, themed Lipad. Finally, Flower Sale head Patricia Manarang presented her plans for this year’s Flower Sale, themed Evergreen.

Before the presentation of the Application Process by our Vice President of Human Resources Ric Alano, some of the UP MSS Executive Committee members showcased the organization’s different projects: Vice President for External Affairs Eunice Raya Burgos for the College Admission Test Comprehensive Help for Universities in the Philippines or CATCH UP, Vice President for Publicity Karl Khumo Calagan for Wisdom Wednesday, and Secretary Nikka Quejano for the UP MSS Board.

To close out the program, UP MSS President Andrea Jannina Fernandez began to tell her UP MSS story—how she got in, why she decided to join, and what the org has helped her navigate her college life since freshman year.
